The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that infects cells of the human immune system, destroying or impairing their function. In the U.S., there are:
- 1.2 million people living with HIV1
- 50,000 estimated new HIV infections each year1
Early identification of HIV-positive individuals, viral load monitoring, and resistance testing may improve patient outcomes and reduce disease transmission. Laboratory tests are key at every stage of the HIV care continuum, and they provide clinicians with tools that allow them to manage patients more effectively.
The ADVIA Centaur® HIV Ag/Ab Combo assay is designed to simultaneously detect the presence of the HIV viral protein (p24 antigen) and the antibodies produced in response to the HIV (HIV-1 or HIV-2) viral infection.2 The ability to detect both the antigen and antibody may enable earlier detection of acute infection, allowing both clinical management and behavior modification that may reduce transmission.
